Welcome 3rd and 4th grade students and families!

A little about our Recorder Unit! This year, students in 3rd and 4th grade will be learning and reviewing the basics of the recorder in music class as well experiencing new recorder repertoire. This includes, but is not limited to, the line and space notes of the Treble clef, proper breathing technique, playing technique, and fingering techniques for the recorder. To help us apply all of this wonderful recorder knowledge, we will be following the program called "Recorder Karate." This program will allow students to learn new notes and rhythms on the recorder one at a time by learning and practicing a new song each week. 3rd grade will use "Recorder Karate!" the original, and 4th grade will use "Recorder Karate 2".
After practicing each recorder song in class several times, students will come up in groups of 3-4 to "test" their skills on a particular song before they can move on to the next level song. This process will allow each individual student to move at their own pace when learning these songs and "test out" when they feel ready. When students "test out" and on to the next song, they earn a colored skill-level "belt" to tie onto their recorder. Similar to Karate belts, each color represents a different or harder skill level; white belt being the most basic and black belt being the most challenging. |
